<The USA has also been the big promoter of free trade as an expression of American foreign policy ie. "China Open Door Policy" ect. when compared to the various trade policies of the European powers. >

The British Empire ensured China allowed trade too. The American Empire seems to be like the British Empire, but on steroids, and without the sense of humour.

Note USA free trade attitude to steel imports, sheep imports, farm subsidies etc... not exactly free.

<I am a BIG believer in quotas>

Just how BIG are you?

< and any trade barrier that gives my nation an advantage over another. I am a nationalist and frankly don't understand how anyone could not favor their own country over any other. To think otherwise is just illogical and self destructive.>

You commies are all the same. We freedom lovers understand that a "nation" doesn't have a single point of view. What is good for one part of a nation is bad for another part of a nation. Governments and those running them usually confuse themselves as being the nation.

Refusing to allow your citizens to buy steel from China and forcing them to buy steel from rip-off merchants in your nation isn't "good for the nation". It's good for the rip-off merchants.

Trade barriers don't give "your nation an advantage". Trade barriers give your nation a disadvantage. If you get involved in a trade war and "protection" as happened after 1929, people might learn, once again, that stopping trade does not create wealth. It destroys it. It creates unemployment because people who used to produce things no longer have customers. It's quite simple really.

Commie statist big government fascists have trouble "getting it". We liberals understand that freedom is a good thing.
