I noticed that he completely overlooked Turkey, which already is a democracy and that the party in power is a religious party. (I'm going from memory here, so I could be wrong. When they came to power a few years ago, there was great concern about what they would do, but it appears they have operated pretty much like any political party in a parliamentary democracy.

The current Turkish government is not as friendly to U.S. interests as some of the previous governments, but their disagreements are not insurmountable and US-Turkish relations are still friendly.

It seems to me that the author makes the assumption that any Islamic party dominated government would be extremely hostile to the United States. I'm not sure that follows. He glosses over the fact that the main reason that Islamic parties are the only effective opposition to authoritarian regimes is because almost all other forms of civil opposition are banned.

It was an interesting article - thanks!
