You've got a point. Pop music is all about In The Moment, and creating implicit connections between the Tragic Events Of Youth and The Song.

Music today is no better and no worse than it was 5, 10, 20 years ago. Personally I find stuff like the Beatles obvious and boring - sophomoric, even - but then that stuff happened before I was born and I have no emotional tie to it. OTOH, people like Joey Ramone (who could barely read english, let alone a sheet of music) and Lou Reed are in my Personal Pantheon of Musical Godliness because they spoke to me when my ears were most open.

There is ALWAYS an active retro subculture. It is as "significant" now as it was when some kids were yearning for Pat Boone during Beatlemania.
