I think your average run-of-the-mill capitalist society would be the best modern example of one where intellectuals feel "under-valued" and "rejected."

I just don't know of any "average run-of-the-mill capitalist society" that is not also a social democracy so our data are ambiguous. Perhaps if there were such a capitalist utopia, there would be no demand for intellectuals as Klaus suggested. It seems plausible to me.
