I beg to differ (as usual). I'm 51 (as of last week) and I not only know of but own records by Moby, Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam. Not to mention Eminem. I really like the new Beck CD, too.
I know a lot of people over 40 who know of and listen to those artists and many other current bands I could name. (White Stripes, anyone?)
I also think that it's much more common for young kids to be listening to music from the 60's to the 80's today than it was for kids in the 60's to be listening to 40's stuff. I like to ask young people who their favorite bands are, and I'm amazed at how often I'll hear answers like "The Cars" or "Led Zeppelin". I think that's basically because rock and roll may have changed, but it hasn't ever gone out of style. Whereas the swing music of the 40's was completely supplanted by rock.
It's interesting that rap and hip hop (the "new" forms of music that evolved in the 80s and 90s) have not replaced rock, but rather have cross-pollinated with it.
