Tell me a little something about disk images. What happens if you make one to another media but then your hard drive crashes and you can't boot your machine? How do you restore your disk image?

I use a swap rack in my computer. I can pull its "sled" in which a hard drive is located and insert a different sled with attached hard drive. I keep 2-3 small hard drives in these sleds and each is a clone of my main drive. If something goes awry with it I just boot from the 2nd hard drive with the most recent clone and life goes on with very little fuss or loss of time or data.

Which is better? I need to know more about how you would restore from an image of your boot partition.
