Toby- I guess the I-K press release lost something in translation.

As often happens, the japanese and english versions may differ somewhat in meaning. I'm surprised that they confused "EL" and "LED", though, since words like electroluminescent and light emitting diode are borrowed from English. The excerpt below sounds very much like an EL display with an organic fluorescent dye used for the color conversion. Has I-K published any of the identities of the chemical materials? It would be easy to distinguish an EL display from an LED if we know what the materials were.

Interestingly, Nichia Chemical was an oridnary industrial chemicals company until a couple of years ago when they demonstrated gallium nitride blue LEDs.

For full-color implementation, Idemitsu-Kosan uses the combination of a blue mono-color EL display, which the company announced at SID in May, and a proprietary color conversion technology. Specifically, the panel incorporates a color conversion material that transforms blue emissions into green and red. This material is patterned in front of an organic blue EL display.
