Cable, DSL Face New Broadband Competition

Cellular/Wi-Fi Routers for the Broadband-Challenged

Verizon currently has the only EV-DO network in the U.S., available in 32 cities and suburban areas, but Sprint is in the midst of rolling out its own. With that in mind, Kyocera showed off an engineering sample of its KR1 EV-DO router at CTIA. EV-DO can, on average, provide 300 to 500 Kbps of throughput (though carriers and technology providers are quick to point out the potential of getting up to 2.4 Mbps from it). This router, manu-factured by D-Link in partnership with Kyocera, has a 1x EV-DO WAN interface (requiring either a 1x EV-DO PC card or 1x EV-DO USB phone).
