2006 and 2008 are elections for the Democrats to lose. The Republicans have served them up a perfect scenario for recapturing the House of Representative and White House.

Now, knowing the Democrats, they'll probably screw this opportunity up big time. But there is still plenty of time for the Democrats to build a strategy and plenty of war and controversy surrounding Iraq before the elections.

Iraq is likely to get even more unstable in coming months with the pending Constitutional referendum in October. That means more American deaths and more bad press for the President. His approval ratings are already slipping below 40%.

What the Democrats need to do if they want to win in 2006 and 2008 is take the focus off Iraq and put it on America, rebuilding America. They can point to Iraq as a failure of Republicans leadership and give Americans a reason to vote for a change in direction that focuses on America instead. That will win them the election in 2006. If they continue their tepid support for the War in Iraq they'll lose in 2006 for sure. Why will people want to vote for them if they offer no change in policy? 2008 is probably in the bag for the Dems if they select a moderate candidate. OH and MO, two key states for Republicans, now have below 40% approval for the President. Without those states, the Republicans lose bigtime in 2008. The math is simple. Kerry would have won last year with OH.
