Moominoid Re: "Mestizo" Filipinos like to joke about how much Spanish blood they each may have, using the length of their nose as the gage. <g> If your nose is longer than the thickness of two fingers you are "Spanish" ect. All in good fun. With the Filipino clans there is probably a great deal of Spanish blood but you don't have a distinct Mestizo class like you do in many Latin American nations. There are a few clans, like the Sorianos who own BPI Bank, who have gone to great lengths to maintain thier ties to Spain and their Spanish genes, some of them having light hair and eyes. But they are a rare exception. If you look closely at a group of the Filipino illuminati you will see that for the most part they are pretty much the same mix of folk you find on any street. The last several presidents have all been "Pinoys" though Garcia back in the 1950's and Manuel Quezon in the 1940's had lots of Spanish blood. President Quirino back in the early 1950's was a Filipino Chinese.

And you do have many Filipino Chinese in powerful positions, some of these folks have been there a long time and others came more recently after 1949. Many of these clans have taken Filipina wives and all I have met speak Filipino languages as their first language. Some of them joke that they don't even know how to use chopsticks any more.

And whenever you se a guy in the picture with really culry hair he is realted to the Igorots or one of the other mountain tribes and these folks have been there for untold thousands of years, long before the Malay Filipino began to arrive maybe 3000 years ago.
