Government, at various levels, allocates a vast amount of American resources. Its true that for now (at least if you ignore the effects of regulation, which isn't normally considered socialism even if it also brings decisions under government control) the private sector as a whole still controls more resources then the government, but the percentage the government controls has been on an upward trend since at least the Civil War. Note I didn't say that the US was socialist, but that "It already has been socialized quite a lot." In other words it has become a lot closer to socialist then it used to be. It would still have a long way to go to actually diserve the label socialist.

Look you are so far right politically and economically, every thing is going to look like socialism to you.

Generally, when political/economic spectrums are discussed, the US is seen to be politically right and a very capitalist country. For an example, Clinton and JFK would be considered economically right or more pro capitalist than socialistic even though it would be your natural tendency to argue otherwise. When I have seen an economic spectrum laid out with capitalism being a ten and socialism a one, the US usually sits around 8. In other words, it leans much more towards capitalism than socialism.

So your fears that the US has been socialized alot are groundless. In fact we could use some more socialism. Too much of the population remains unsupported and too much of the country's wealth is controlled by the rich oligarchs.
