re:<<these guys are leaving houses in their wake>>

Good point. And the owners of those houses pay property taxes which support schools.

Thomas Jefferson High School of Science & Technology (in Northern Virginia) has been widely regarded as the best high school in the U.S. Admission is selective, and kids commute many miles by bus to attend.

The school is so academically challenging that a few kids who were friends of my kids actually dropped out or had to take a year or two off from education in general after graduating. They were exhausted.

Admission standards have (controversially) been relaxed to admit more so-called "disadvantaged" students who couldn't pass the tests, and that has been overturned. Not sure where admission standards are at the moment, except to know they are an issue when you have a limited number of openings vs. great need for that type of education.

But it's only one school, catering to an elite group of kids who can pass the tests and get in.

Somebody's not encouraging young people in the right way to learn the skills and become flexible enough to keep up with changes in the economy, and we don't have enough people to teach them what they need to know.

I think this is a big problem that has been festering for a long time--even before the tech boom caused a bunch of opportunists to get involved and then fizzled out.
