LA isn't normally present. Normal metabolism burns glucose and O2, producing CO2 and energy (ATP , cyclic AMP, let's not even go there).

When the cells don't get enuf oxygen, they shift to another metabolic pathway; anerobic, without oxygen. Lactic acid is a by-product of the pathway. Gets changed again when oxygen is plentiful. If the LA stays in the muscles, you get pain. That's why you cool down; pump blood thru to wash all the lactic out.

Most I did was 12 or 13 miles. But we have hills here.
