Having followed it at the time, I was around when Buckley finally came clean with everybody. An example of the logical error of "imanentizing the escathon" is an old fashioned liberal "greatsociety" tendency to assume the possibility of a man-made Utopia.

They used to annoy by making stupid arguments like "If we can defeat Hitler and Imperial Japan, then land on the moon, we can damn sure eliminate poverty in [choose your level]: This city; America; The World.

Give the dinosaurs of the long-lost patriotic liberal movement a certain amount of credit, though: While they weren't any SMARTER than today's nose-picking left, they actually believed they could DO something, rather than just function as a Fifth Column against America in all circumstances, and stoking hate for the better off and productive members of our society.

I have to say, however, that the kids editing and writing for National Review and NRO today are the best group of conservative opinion artists that venerable publication has ever had...
