A long time ago I was a member of The Well, one of the first online communities.

The impression that you get of other people often depends on thier ability to write, and write quickly.

The Well had a number of openly known "celebrities" musicians like David Crosby, at least one astronaut - Rusty Sweigert, Mitch Kapor who founded Lotus 1-2-3, etc. Also a couple of convicted felons.

They also had even more relatively famous people operating under pseudonyms. There was very little to give them away.

The Well would occasionaly have 3-D space meetings of members - my what a motley crew - almost everyone was dressed differently, had different hair styles from different eras, different body language, etc.

One's ability to write was still the most noticable item.

I don't think intentional deception is needed to get very distorted impressions from this limited medium.
