JDS Uniphase CEO OK'd For $400,000 Bonus For FY 2005

"JDS Uniphase, the world's largest maker of parts for fibre-optic networks, said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that the bonus for the year ended June 30 includes a customer satisfaction improvement bonus, a corporate governance move recently set up by the company.

Under the move, the company ties up compensation to customer satisfaction, and eligible employees get bonus amounting to 1% of the salary."

I have no problem with a CEO getting a bonus if he deserves it; however, I can't fail to find a slight bit of amusement here. No one will dispute that customer satisfaction is important but ultimately do you want to compensate your employees on it? I don't think so. You want to compensate them on how well they run the company. How about a bonus based on shareholder satisfaction? I mean how can Kennedy take any bonus in good conscience when he the stock has gone from about 3.50 to 1.50 in the last year? It defies description. Sure customers are satisfied but shareholders aren't. Who does management work for? The customers? Maybe there is an underlying philosophical failure here operating within the ethos of this company. They have forgotten that corporations are for profit.

When Kennedy gets the company back into the black then let him take his bonus. When the stock has regained it's preeminent position and market share whether through judicious acquisitions, mergers, price efficiencies etc. then let him be rewarded.

Sure we're in a fiber slump, but that's an excuse for a year or two at most. Someone needs to put some fire in management's spirit.
