Buckley made his career as an editorialist with words and phrases like that. As old-style liberlism collapsed and we headed toward the Reagan era, his fan base grew, and he began to write simpler and more accessable stuff.

The "old" Buckley was a work of intellectual art, a treasure for the re-emerging pro-American movement. But the movement had to start speaking to the millions who were starting to GET IT, and Buckley made contributions there as well.

Want to get kids to think and write at a young age (where the union teachers totally FAIL them)? Have them read Buckley's collected editorials from the 50's and 60's. It's like drilling them on a keyboard with Bach exercises...
