"During the coking processes
used in Suncor and Syncrude’s upgrading of the bitumen to
produce synthetic crude oil, the vanadium is concentrated to
between 2.0 and 3.5 pct (3.6 to 6.2 pct V2O5) in the fly ash
(carbon-free basis), which represents a vanadium grade of
roughly 2 to 5 times higher than the highest grade concentrates
currently processed for primary vanadium recovery in South
Africa and Australia.[2,3] Currently, approximately 250 and
50 tonnes of fly ash are produced by Suncor and Syncrude per
day, respectively, representing a resource of approximately
3.6 million kilograms of V2O5 world vanadium production has
increased per annum or roughly 3 pct of world production.[4]
With ongoing expansions at Syncrude and Suncor, this value
could increase to 6 pct of total world production. .."
