My only point was that a U.S. President DID explicitly call for America to sacrifice and conserve fossil fuel energy, but the American people did not listen, act, or force change. All subsequent leaders ignored the problem (for all intents and purposes) and now we are fucked. Given homo sapiens' inherent flaws (lack of foresight) and unalterable genetic pre-programs, I don't know if it could have played out any differently. It serves an individual's inclusive fitness to exploit available resources for their own advantage so it is unlikely the present oil exploitation bonanza and subsequent collapse could have been avoided once it began. That is my fairly-well-informed opinion, anyway. Jesse
