AP Japan OKs Cardiac Science Defibrillator Thursday August 25, 6:47 pm ET Japanese Regulators Approve More Advanced Version of Cardiac Science Defibrillator
IRVINE, Calif. (AP) -- Cardiac Science Inc. said Thursday that the Japanese government approved its updated automatic public-access defibrillator, or AED, ending a review process that stretched out over two years. ADVERTISEMENT Shares of the maker of emergency defibrillators and related medical devices jumped 9.7 percent to $1.13 in after-hours trading. Its stock closed up 1 cent at $1.03 in regular session on the Nasdaq.
Cardiac Science has sold an earlier version of the defibrillator through Nihon Kohden Corp. since 2002, but the lengthy review of the more advanced product allowed a competitor with an approved product to capture some of its market share, the company said.
The firm's 2005 shipments to Japan were sharply lower than 2004 shipments as a result.
The "biphasic" product -- which uses a more sophisticated current flow -- will be sold under the CardioLife brand by Japan's largest medical device maker, Nihon Kohden.
"The product is now ready for shipment and we are confident that with our biphasic version AED will allow us to regain our previous momentum," said Chairman and Chief Executive Raymond W. Cohen, in a statement. |
