I heard a rumor..can't verify its validity, that the 700 Club and Pat Robertson are behind that phenomenon . Seems Pat secretly raised the money to drill a very deep hole (he's tight with oil interests and GW)..and then designed and constructed the world's longest straw... he and his friends attached the straw to a large can of WD 40. He figures it'll eventually lead, grease the way so to speak, to his much awaited Rapture.
