Rubbish! During the Reagan and Bush(41) Administrations, roughly two out of every three South Americans went from living under a military dictatorship to living under a civilian democracy.

1983 Argentina - Civilian rule restored (38 million people, 2005)
1985 Brazil - Civilian rule restored (179 million people, 2005)
1985 Uruguay - Civilian rule restored (3 million people, 2005)
1989 Chile - elections (Pinochet defeated)(16 million people, 2005)

Was the Reagan Administration against socialism? Yes, but it wasn't being socialist that caused the Reagan Administration to support the Contras. It was because the Sandinistas were Marxist, and a personal pet project of Fidel Castro (who supported the FSLN insurgency and government with thousands of advisors). As it turns out, the Socialism that the FSLN engaged in (Pinata) was more like the Socialism of the Mexican PRI than Marxist. I suppose if Ortega had told the Reagan Administration that he was interested in Nationalizing parts of the economy to personally enrich his family and supporters, the United States would never have supported the Contras. Ortega lost elections in 1990, 1996 and 2001 - having lost the support of even the Communist Party.

re: "I am inclined to believe that the "democracies" in South America you referred to were "created" by artifice, subtle force and bribery under the auspices of the US. They are not natural democracies. Rather, they are metastable democracies and all that that implies!
There is often more to what just meet the eye! You are evidently one of those who swallow everything --- hook, line and sinker --- that your government and the government-controlled media throw out for public consumption. It seems to me you are being naive and you expect others to be just as naive as yourself."
