The chipsets could be customized for an individual customer but
this would not be the norm. Custom programming from a hardware
vendor always raises the issue of continuing support and is
discouraged. This is the role of the systems integrator.

If you could try to envision when a lot of this equipment was being developed::::every Joe and his brother-in-law was intoducing a new PC or some type of controller. Special case customer requested features often become next version standard features. The equipment continues to evolve year after year. Each vendor did and still does try to incorporate the best marketable features into his product.

The Y2k problem can exist in any generation of hardware equipment and at any level of the software. Tools may save a lot of time but the solutions are still labor intensive,
