I don't know the man, myself, and the only two people I know who have met him have not seen him recently. So, no, I don't have proof on that point.

To me it is just as likely that what Thompson is reporting is true.

That is because you want it to be true. See post to you from JC Dithers on Hiroshima/Nagasaki and Harry Truman.

We really don't know, and so to argue either position is sort of an exercise in writing a lot and surmising and wasting a good bit of time (all very popular pasttimes at SI).

On that we agree.

Neither of us knows. All we know is Doug Thompson says it is so.

But, does that make it so?

I think not.
