Portfolio Update:

There are only 3 trading days left in August and the portfolio continues to outperform the markets.

For the month of August:

Russell 2000 ... down <4.5%>
Nasdaq ... down <2.9%>
Dow ... down <2.3%>
S&P 500 ... down <2.3%>

The Portfolio ... up 2.4%

One of the objectives of this portfolio is to show a profit when the markets are down. This objective continues to be achieved.

The other objective is to show a 2% to 4% profit every month and let compounding do its magic. This objective is also being achieved.

I am showing a result slightly better than 2% per month compounded on the year. I would like for the number to be higher but, one must consider the condition of the market. The market is down year to date and I am showing a profit which should bring better than 20% annualized. This is how you know if your trading plan is conceptually sound or not. Does it provide positive results in a negative market environment?

Year to date:

Dow ... down <3.5%>
Nasdaq ... down <2.5%>
S&P 500 ... down <0.5%>
Russell 2000 ... down <0.4%>

The Portfolio ... up 18.0%

I use a mark to market procedure and the results include any positive or negative results carried over from the previous month. Cash is also included in the bottom line number. The 18% year to date result is the bottom line number on the whole of the portfolio.

The portfolio has been up and running for 10 months now and the bottom line result for the 10 months is ..... up 25.1%.

I have used no fundamental analysis and all trades were of short term in nature. I don't think I've held a stock for more than 2 weeks time. Most trades were held within a 2-5 day time frame, a few as long as 10 days. And this is important, I was hardly ever 100% invested and in most months, never more than 50% invested, therefore minimizing risk exposure.

I will be cautious next week as I don't wish to blow the performance. With September coming, its important to note that it is the worst performing month of the year historically for those who only play the long side.
