Saddam was a secular rightwing dictator and Arabist. He was pro sex, booze, guns, business and glamor. He kept the majority Shias under his thumb by persecuting them mercilessly. They are mainly Islamic fundamentalists. He also waged war against Iranian Islamics. In the 80's, Saddam served as our bulwark against the spread of Islamic fundamentalism, which is the same soil from which Al Qaida sprouted. We armed him and coddled him. Saddam loved Reagan and was shocked when Bush Sr. objected to his invasion of Kuwait. He thought he had tacit permission from the US.

Al Qaida and Saddam only had one thing in common, they hated Israel. Saddam never sheltered Al Qaida training camps. Al Qaida would have been crazy to trust Saddam. Osama wanted to topple Saddam.
