According to Richard Clarke, Bush-Cheney wanted
an excuse to invade Iraq and tried to blame 9-11 on them as their primary objective. They ordered Clarke to "think Iraq" and pressured the CIA to come up with intel backing this hoax. Even if they found no evidence they knew they could fabricate some and make suspicious linkages like:

- Osama and Saddam are both Arabs
- Saddam has met a few friends of Osama
- Osama and Saddam both hate Israel and the US (actually Saddam just hates Bush, not the US, he loved Reagan)

Lost in all this was the fact that the two most dangerous countries vis a vis terrorism remain Bush allies Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. After that, Yemen, Syria and Somalia. Iraq was never about terrorism though they had some minor involvement.

Bush invaded Iraq for the oil. No other reason makes any sense.
