The eye is not the real problem. The major problem comes on the Northeast, Eastern portion of the swirl. This is where the greatest wind force exists.

And if you will go to the sattelite image, you will see the enormity of the swirl. It extends all the way from the Yucatan Peninsula on the south to waters of West Florida but centering on the Alabama/Mississippi/Louisiana coasts.
