I've seen a lot of doomsters, and bought into a few. I recall (Paul whathisname?) that world population growth was going to cause mass starvation , massive dieoffs and food wars, supposedly before now. Agro and birth control efforts and technology apparently defeated that threat for the moment.

That the world can't all live as Americans do now at the current population levels is something I agree with. That there are too many humans on earth I agree with. That peak oil equates to the end of the human race, I don't. We're very clever animals, and a few of us will survive, even if we have to clomp around in scuba gear, killing the bastards that want to steal our air.

Another scenario has our biotechnology advancing to the point to where we can modify humans so that they can live in the poisoned world we create.

On this little planet, we're our own God. We need to accept that awful, frightening responsibility. The actual God, if there is one, may still smite us with an asteroid, but down here, we're it.
