I think your point is valid, Ionesco. People bring different backgrounds and viewpoints to basic training. However, in the cases of relatives of my friends who entered the military lately, they all had in common that after basic training, their attitudes towards life and what was important changed dramatically, and their relatives perceived all of them as becoming somewhat robotic in their thinking, and dulled, in the sense that they were no longer making individual judgments and were sort of programmed in their responses. Like they had lost their reasoning skills, you know? Really changed young people, like they were in a cult. Very disturbing to their relatives.
