More Evidence That The Media Hasn’t Done Its Job – As If More Were Needed

On Fox News Sunday, two mothers were featured who had lost their sons in Iraq. One was chosen to represent the anti-war position and one to represent those who support the mission in Iraq. The anti-war mom, Barbara Porchia, was very well spoken and did not appear to be a radical Bush hater like so many in the anti-war movement have proven to be.

The questions Ms. Porchia said she had about the war all pertained not to what is currently happening in Iraq, but rather why we went to Iraq in the first place. She repeatedly recited a list of talking points of things she said we were told that turned out not to be true. Her list included no WMD, no imminent threat and no connection to 9/11. (That imminent threat one, a Wesley Clark favorite, was a blast from the past. I thought that one had been debunked years ago, but evidently it is being brought up again.)

Ms. Porchia’s questions only reinforced my opinion that the record needs to be set straight on what was and was not said before we went into Iraq, and about what has and has not been found there. The fact that she could ask such questions also convinced me that not only does the President need to be doing a better job communicating that information, but also that the media has done and continues to do a terrible job reporting information on Iraq.

I understand that Chris Wallace, who was interviewing Ms. Porchia, was not treating her as a politician, but as a grieving mother and did not challenge any of the talking points she recited. When politicians and activists recite the same points, they are rarely ever challenged either, though. I won’t go through the many individual arguments regarding WMD, imminent threat, or Iraq’s connections to 9/11 at this time (I provided some in links below), but the fact that these things still need to be debated shows what a terrible job the media has done and continues to do. For more on that subject see my post on today’s Meet The Press below.
