The Geopolitics of Katrina

A Category 5 hurricane, the most severe type measured, Katrina has been reported heading directly toward the city of New Orleans. This would be a human catastrophe, since New Orleans sits in a bowl below sea level. However, Katrina is not only moving on New Orleans. It also is moving on the Port of Southern Louisiana. Were it to strike directly and furiously, Katrina would not only take a massive human toll, but also an enormous geopolitical one.

The last hurricane to hit NO was Betsy back in the 1960s. According to weather records, the storm surge then was 8-10 feet and inundated the city with six feet of water. Katrina is bushing a storm surge of 28'. How can the NO complex of levees, dikes and pumps stand up to such a surge of water?

Can you imagine the impact of losing a refinery and having the nation's largest port shut down indefinitely. Its a mess.

Meanwhile, just saw the latest weather report. They have narrowed the path of Katrina.....it looks like it will hit just west of NO. In other words, the city will get the east side/the worst side of the hurricane. And to make matters worse, the current heat index in NO is 99. Yuck!
