The problem in the US (as in most other "developed" nations) is that while Americans don't like what their "elected representatives" are doing, they certainly don't want them to take the concrete steps necessary to change their ways. In early July, an AP/Ipsos poll was taken asking Americans if they were concerned about the size of and the increases in the US budget deficit. More than 70% of respondents said they worried "some" or "a lot" about it.

When remedies were suggested, the tune changed very quickly. Only 35% of Americans were in favor of cutting government spending and services to balance the budget. Only 18% were willing to face higher taxes to achieve the same end. And when asked about the only method which had any chance of actually working - cutting spending AND raising taxes - only ONE PERCENT voted in favor.
