I'm in Houston thanks to my annual trip to Archer City, Texas, a stroke of luck. Left town last Wednesday.

I don't think NO will survive the hit. There may be ten of thousands of deaths. The city will get flattened by the by winds, then truly devastated by the floods.

I've already mentally accepted the loss of my home and all the evidence of a life lived which it contains. My wife and son are with me, which is of course good.

The city may be uninhabitable for months, perhaps more than that thanks to the toxic gumbo which will permeate everything.

The economic cost may be in the $50-75 billion range once the loss of the nation's largest port is recognized.
