I doubt both will survive over 20-30 years - based on seeing the trend there the last 20 years. Now by survive - it may mean one of the two is sold, or the two combine at some point - probably during a severe US downturn.

Most likely IMO - Ford would buy all or part of GM - or what's left of GM. But it could happen the other way around.

They definitely need to rethink benefits - as your article said - you have people getting health care at zero deductible - who else does that these days (another reason for universal health care - which would help US companies...)

Also - I know personally people that came out of high school at 18, worked 30 years at GM, then retired at 48 - full pension and healthcare for the rest of their life. That has been changing with new hires, but it probably is time to renegotiate that stuff too. Nobody else does that now.
