Had a tremendous time this year.

A media person from the Houston Chronicle was there and "interviewed" us for a story on AC which should appear in a month or so.

Had the Archer City Museum opened up especially for us (it's not otherwise open) and saw a gallows and other interesting stuff.

Last Thursday we stayed at the local B&B (not the Spur Hotel); the owner doesn't take credit cards and I didn't have much cash on me so she simply asked us to mail her the moolah when we got back. Truly hospitable folks, nice to the bone. McMurtry no longer lives in AC any more despite maintaining a grand home there. He generally stays with her.

The local courthouse has been renovated. It looked empty so I walked in, and blundered into the judge's chambers, startled him half to death. After a few pleasantries and introductions, he gave us a tour of a very nice building which took some years to renovate.

On the way back, we listened to the new Harry Potter book at our son's insistence. Got a phone call Sat. afternoon after completing the Hotter 'n Hell as we were approaching Waco, "hey, don't you know there's a hurricane in your part of the world?"

Oh, s***.

No way to prepare the house, though friends and neighbors did what they could. I expect a whole lot of damage, particularly as we have some very large windows. The curtains we had to float a bond issue to pay for are probably ruined. But have top notch insurance, so we'll be OK.

I suppose this bother is simply a balancing of things. Had way too much fun this summer, the pendulum has swung.
