"But, I just want to say the USA does NOT support an independent Kurdish nation, and will not unless our LONG TIME allies the Turks change their opinion."
I never said the US did --- I said the KURDS haven't given up on their dream of an independent (& larger) Kurdish homeland.
"Personally, I am impressed with how well the Kurds have managed their little piece of real estate. They seem to have their act together...."
Yep, me too.
"... and if I were an Iraqi of any persuasion, I would think it would be IN MY BEST INTERESTS to follow their example."
Yep. Expect (after the civil war) that the Shiites will make their half of Iraq into an independent country of their own... perhaps with some sort of linkage to the Kurdish mini-state.
"Imagin an Iraq as well managed as the Kurds have done with what they have? It would become IMHO a garden of Eden in the Middle East. Something they havent had in a very long time."
Why not just imagine lollypops and cotton candy for everyone while you are at it?
I'm not given to pollyanna-ish flights of fancy... but that doesn't mean that I don't wish them all the best luck, because I do. (Same as I wish the people of Burma good luck at securing peace and freedom... and Sudan... and Zimbabwe... and China... and Uzbekistan... and Russia, etc., etc.)
But, there ain't any laws that say we have to pour our national wealth down every bottomless, and corrupt, hole we find in the Third World... or, at least, I don't remember the American people ever voting for such a silly policy. |
