Bakersfield '52. It's funny; google it, and it gets called a 7.3, 7.5, 7.7, 7.8. The paper was calling it 7.8. The damaging aftershock was only the fifth strongest, at 5.8, but did major damage, not to mention it woke me up from a nap. County hospital was damaged, my school condemned. We ended up going split session to a school across town, across the street from the fair grounds. Got to see (Gov)Earl Warren open the fair that year. Then, all us boy types spent the next 3 weeks seeing how many flies we could kill.
