I had left NO last Wednesday for our annual summer ending ritual trip to Archer City, TX, to visit McMurtry's books shops and do the Hotter 'n Hell bike ride in nearby Wichita Falls.
No TV, no radio, listening to the latest Harry Potter at son's insistence on the way to Austin to visit my parents and other relatives after ending the H 'n H on Sat. afternoon when we get phone call about hurricane.
Visited Austin, then came to Houston where wife's sister lives. We've been here since then. Wife has something to do as she's with feds coordinating the re-opening of federal courts. Me, I'm going stir crazy, making phone calls to clients, insurance companies, and generally making a nuisance out of myself. Spending a lot of time with son, which is nice.
As far as the probabilities of disaster are concerned, we of course recognized that a catastrophe could happen. But cat. 5 storms are quite, quite rare. Hell, cat. 3 is rare. Direct hits by cat. 1 and 2 are no big deal. So, the odds aren't that bad. I've lived in NO since 1969, and never have evacuated, though I would have gotten the hell out of Dodge for this one.
So, you shake the dice, and live in a great place just like the folks in SF do.
A disaster can happen anywhere. |
