Star-Crossed Times For the Crescent City

Most of that is tourist hype, laid on thick for the rubes to part them from their money. Most of the entrepreneurs in the French Quarter selling that voodoo shit and all the Anne Rice claptrap come from places like Sweden and Arkansas and Texas.

"A Streetcar Named Desire" was written by a Mississippi Queen. Pure gay fantasy but people think it's reality.

Well, that's America. We reinvent ourselves and pretend it's the truth, and it may as well be the truth. Nothing like a good story. People eat it up.

But it's no more real than Disneyland. Not that Disneyland isn't fun. But at least grown-ups are running Disneyland.

The city used to be a place where grownups worked. The port, oil and gas, shipping, import-export. But now it's designed to be a Disneyland of the mind, magnolias and voodoo and jazz and Mardi Gras and gambling. No more able to handle adversity than one of Tennessee William's heroines.

The real heroes, to me, are the doctors and nurses that are keeping the hospitals going. That's the real New Orleans.
