Sensitive to the human toll -- as well as his own already-low standing in public opinion polls -- President Bush made the decision yesterday morning to cut short his time in Crawford, Texas, and returned suddenly to Washington.
Given the total paralysis, I fault Bush for not doing it sooner.
This is worse than 9/11. Where is the leadership?
One thing I've realized -- took me long enough but I see it clearly now. Libertarianism is a nice idea, but libertarianism won't save lives in a natural disaster.
Humanity has gotten where we are today, especially in places like America, due to intelligent leadership.
There are no grownups in charge in Louisiana. The governor and the mayor of New Orleans and the rest of them are incompetent.
I think I know why. Taking my high school as an example, out of the 6 National Merit finalists, not one of them lives in Louisiana. Nor did any of the 6 semifinalists. The brains of Louisiana have drained. This scenario repeats itself all over the country -- kids move out of the South, out of rural areas, looking for work, and never come back.
I was telling a friend in Louisiana that my son is working towards a Ph.D. in economics, and he remarked "and then he'll get a job working in a bookstore." And in Louisiana, that would be true.
People with brains don't even go into public service anymore. Except for people like Bobby Jindal, and look what happened to him. Too dark to be elected Governor by the Country Club Republicans so they've got an idiot Democrat instead. |
