Firstly, the views of people are not conveniently separated and wrapped like butcher meat so you can grab what cuts you like. I personally enjoy to learn from people. I cannot do that when other people ban them from me "for my own good". I really don't appreciate others deciding for me what books are "off limits" and what people are "off limits". The "you (or they) or somebody can start another thread" simply compounds the problem and adds to the work of SI. Nobody ever forced anyone to read Mark Twain or D.H. Lawrence...

Insults and anger are normal parts of discussions from time to time (as all families know), but we don't "ban" our kids and we should never pretend to "ignore" them while listening at the keyhole.

Nobody is forced to read ANY post or to visit ANY thread. So why add layers of pretense and showmanship and "thread
weapons"? How is anyone hurt by NOT reading a post of their own free will??

Hell, by Not reading a post you might miss wonderful apologies, epiphanies, or links to Middle Earth. But it is a free world. And it is the EASIEST thing in the world to NOT read posts that one finds unsavoury at a glance.

We already have banning as a tool for placing reasonable limitations on free speech.
