Look, it will all become much clearer if you take a look at where the 17th St. Canal intersects with Lake Pontchartrain.

Do you have Google Earth on your computer? If so, input this:

University of New Orleans Lakefront

Then, pan to your left, and you can see the canals that drain New Orleans and Jefferson Parish. About the third to your left is the one that failed, 17th St./Orpheum.

Edit: make that fourth. If you pull back, it says Metairie Outfall Canal in blue.
