The problem is deniability. Rove and O'Neill were total liars, but immediately put out statements that they had nothing to do with each other, that smearvets were just citizen soldier types unaffiliated with the GOP. In fact, they were totally paid for and organized by the Texas GOP through Tom DElay and Karl Rove's operators and slush funds.

But could Kerry or McCain have proven that? Nope. Not really. In fact if they had attacked Bush personally, Bush would have stood up and condemned the smear campaign and pleaded innocent. Rove made sure he and Bush were buffered, and that Delay and others took care of all the dirty details.

I told you thought, I urged Kerry's people to call a immediate press conferance and invite the press to ask him anything they want about his military record, and to also say he was proud to have helped end the Vietnam War. Kerry decided to take the high road and it was a mistake. McCain fell into the same trap.

BTW, Rove didn't invent these smear campaigns. LBJ used to use them in Texas, putting out rumors his opponent was a pervert and trying to get him to deny it.
