I don't think the quarterly report is a bad idea. Its good that stock holders and bond holders, and investment partners (current and potential) have a relatively up to date look at the companies financial information. What is a bad idea is overrating the importance of quarterly reports. If investors don't look to the longer term they provide incentives for companies not to look to the longer term. I'm not sure this short term outlook would go away without quarterly reports, but I am pretty sure that without reporting requirements it would be even harder to get good information about companies.
