Years ago there was another USAF facility near Alexandria, LA. I recall that town because I saw Elvis there in the mid 70s.

There is a (currently quite significant) USAF base near Shreveport, but it may be further than Houston from NO.

Better facilities are to the East in FL...Pensacola, Hulbert Field, The USNAV facilities in Panama City and an AFB just East of Panama City (I forget the name), and Jacksonville.

Ft Rucker, Alabama, and Ft Benning to the North, in Georgia, have huge facilities and are probably closer that Houston.
