The proper policy response is NOT to punish the industry we need to work us out of this jam. The proper policy response is to back off and let the market work its magic.

Hey, I'm on your side here. Consumers are going to do what makes sense to them. Stupid CAFE rules mean nothing. People are going to be dumping their gas guzzlers in droves (shorting GM and Ford might be a good idea) and buying the most fuel efficient vehicles they can find.

I doubt if the econuts and nanny bureaucrats will ever learn that the free market takes care of itself.

As for the energy supply side, throwing pork right and left accomplishes nothing. Blowing away all the ridiculous impediments and constraints to developing new supplies and refining capacity is what is needed NOW, if not yesterday.

I really wish that the President or someone high up on the bully pulpit chain would clearly and rationally explain to the American people that this country runs on petroleum, now and for the foreseeable future, and that a true crisis awaits if we don't allow the energy companies to produce what is necessary.
