The National Post warns that if the Americans can bully Canada over softwood lumber exports by ignoring court rulings and waging endless court cases, they can and will bully Canada's oil producers. The Post's Diane Francis writes that the issue of trade bullying and protectionism is more important than ever given the fact that next week Vice-President Dick Cheney will visit Alberta's oil sands to underscore its strategic importance to Washington. But America's behaviour concerning softwood lumber should be a cue to Canada's oil industry to give high priority to building a gigantic oil pipeline to the British Columbia coast from the oil sands to avoid being held captive by an increasingly protectionist American market. In fact, it is critical for oil producers to insure that at least half of all new oil sands production be shipped to the coast via a land pipeline. This does two things: It creates price competition for Canada's oil in order to guarantee a fair price. It also keeps the Americans honest. This is not about punishing the Americans for their behaviour. It is about sensible and prudent strategic thinking. www.stockwatch.com
