A classic "awkward juncture" will come for President Bush in January, when billions in bankruptcies and forfeitures begin to roll in from the disaster in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. An estimated 2 million people now have no jobs, and for many of them it will be months or years before they are able to earn a living again.
Will Bush push for relief for these folks, many of them the working poor of the gulf coast, or will he take the sides of his backers in big business, the banks, mortgage brokers and insurance companies?
