Deutsche Telekom commits $3.7b in fiber-optic upgrade

Sep 2, 2005

Telecom Asia Daily

(TelecomWeb via NewsEdge) Deutsche Telekom plans to upgrade its network in Germany and will invest $3.7 billion in the rollout of a fiber-optic network as part of the upgrade effort.

The telco said the network upgrade will allow it to increase network speed to up to 50 Mbps, thus creating the basis for providing its customers with high-level, triple-play services.

The new network is all about rapid Internet access, communications services and individually accessed entertainment offerings, the carrier also said.

By 2006, the first cities will be connected to the new fiber, equating to around three million households.

Walter Raizner, a member of DT's Board of Management responsible for broadband/fixed networks, said "our vision is to give the customer access via one single line, using a range of devices including telephones, televisions, PCs, video telephones and multimedia boxes."

The fiber-network announcement was just one of a series made by the German giant. It also said it will launch high-speed UMTS services in 2006.
